I’ve done an update on one of my favorite parts of chess – publishers of chess books! I have a pretty enormous collection.
Cardoza Publishing – In general, I don’t like most of their chess books. Low quality.
Chess Stars Publishing – is a very high quality publisher of mostly opening books. Their books have a interesting 3 step structure consisting of a quick overview/repertoire, a deeper step-by-step analysis and finally, relevant complete games. I noticed tonight they have a new ipad application which I’m excited to try out.
Everyman Publishers – British publisher of some of our better chess books. The Move-by-Move series is terrific for improving players. Cyrus Lakdawala has written many of them and is one the very best chess authors. For the last few years, they have been publishing electronic versions of their books for PC’s with chessbase and an ipad version that I enjoy quite a bit.
Gambit Publications – Homepage of the chess book publisher Gambit, who have brought us great recent books from John Nunn, Paul Motwani, and John Watson, among others.
McFarland & Co. – Publishers of some terrific, mainly historical, chess books.
Moongoose Press – has a unique collection of books. In particular, I enjoyed their series Wojo’s Weapons which examines how Aleksander Wojtkiewicz was so incredibly efficient at beating club players and winning weekend tournaments in the US. Amateur To IM is also a great book that I think is bit misunderstood. I’d like to write a review about it at some point.
New in Chess – is well known for their yearbooks and is also a publisher of some quality chess books.
Quality Chess – Run by Jacab AAgaard and John Shaw, they are famous for their incredibly deep Grandmaster Opening series. I really enjoyed Alterman’s Gambit Guide because it does a great job of teaching readers how to use the initiative that comes from a variety of gambit lines. Learn From the Legends is one of my all time favorite chess books.
Russel Enterprises – publishes a mixture of historical and modern high quality chess books.
Sahovski – The publisher of Chess Informant also offers the exhaustive 5 volume set The Encyclopedia of Chess Openings, as well as many other books.
I’m hoping you can help me by telling me about the ones I missed in the comment section below.
Hi Tim,

PS .. I could not find any other contact details where to send the info on the website
I would just like to say that I also enjoy Mongoose Press (USA) publications and Quality Chess (UK) publications.
However, for all the Irish speaking people out there and I am not leaving out the English speeaking people on this one. Una O Boyle, one of Ireland’s finest female chess players and chess teacher has authored the first Irish language chess book called ‘Ficheall’ and it is of course also available in the English language too.
